Happy Blogiversary to me! (and a Giveaway)

Four years ago today I wrote my first blog post.  I had two children.  My oldest wasn’t yet school age.  My middle child was my youngest and she had the most adorable curls on top of her head.  There were leg warmers, sewing projects, an old sewing machine (that now does a better job as a side table in the family room than it ever did as a sewing machine), and really bad photography.

So much has changed that it’s all a bit breathtaking just to think about.  At that time we were Christians recovering from a really shitty job as a Children’s Pastor (and his wife).  I had more time to myself and my husband was just starting his career as a public employee.  We were blissfully unaware of what was to come or just how low the levels of suckitude could get.

Now?  We’re a little travel-worn and settling into life as adults and parents.  Some of our youthful dreams have faded behind us – the ones for more or better or bright hope for…something.  We’ve shifted to acceptance of where we are and trying to find a way to continue to survive.  Maintaining?  Something.  Not mundane or less than what was, just…different.

We left Christianity behind a year ago November 1st around the Samhain dinner table.  We fed the fairies in the garden and cut the cords to what once was.  We accepted our pagan-inspired, pantheistically oriented, can’t quite put a name to it, way of seeing the world.  We stopped fearing the god in the sky, hellfire preaching, evangelicalism of our youth and started living authentically…honestly.

Not everything has changed, though.  We still love chili.  I guess that’s something.

I’ve given up blogging more times than I can count.  I lamented my lack of traffic and wished for something different, but at the end of the day, blogging is the one thing that I keep coming back to because there’s something to it that fits just so.

Four years into this blogging project and I’m above all thankful for those that journey here with me.  I appreciate your comments and links.  I’m thankful to have “known” you in some way along life’s path.

In honor of my fourth blogiversary I’m offering up a little giveaway – one Aroma Naturals’ Soy VegePure Travel Tin.  I bought it all by myself because I like you all that much.

To enter all you have to do is leave a comment below to say “Enter me, please!”  Anyone who reads here is eligible…as long as you’re not related to me (sorry, but I’ll buy you birthday and Yuletide presents instead).  I’ll toss all the entries in a hat and have Mr. J draw the winner.  I’ll announce the winner on the blog on Friday, November 2nd, which gives you until the end of the week to enter.  This is a first, but rest assured, if no one enters there will be no hard feelings.  I’ll keep it for myself.  Really, it’s a win-win.  :0)

  5. This is a Republican controlled state. Those rules don’t apply here anymore.

  6. I remember the days of curly hair. So sweet!

    • She was, wasn’t she? So chubby, curly mohawk, goofy smiles – I can still see glimpses of that little girl even if she is a bit surly these days.

  7. (#4) Oh wow… I can relate to a lot of this. I gave up even trying to fit into the ‘Christianity’ mold back in high school but it wasn’t until after college that I realized that my earthloving, take it out to the woods to breathe self needed a more pagan way to relate to the earth and the universe.

Congratulations on your blogiversary!!! Four years is definitely an accomplishment… no matter how many stops and starts you’ve made! (I can relate to that too! 🙂 )

    Happy Samhain!

  8. (#5) Even though I am taking a break from blogging, I’m glad you are not. I get art and politics all in one. I stopped going to church (Catholic) back in college when our Bishop wasn’t supportive of priests getting involved in civil rights. Decided that wasn’t a religion worth being part of. Saved me having to quit later when the Church got really crazy. Not a good place for women!

    • :0) Thank you for your kind words. I miss your blog quite a bit, truth be told. There was an ever so brief moment when I wondered about going Catholic, but then there’s the Pope, the institutionalized misogyny, and a great deal of hierarchy that I just could not swallow. I agree, though, definitely not a good place for women! Then again, I think the same can be said for the vast majority of flavors of Christianity.
